Reducing mortality in COVID-19 patients with prior cardiovascular risk

Several studies point to higher mortality levels in COVID-19 patients with previous cardiovascular risk factors. The project will study a set of 50 genetic variants in samples from more than 3,000 patients who have suffered COVID-19. These variants identify patients predisposed to a hyperinflammatory response during the infection caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. These results should enable improved patient risk stratification and, at the same time, better identification of the almost 10% of the population at risk of developing the most severe forms of COVID-19.

The results can also be used to develop protocols adapted to this situation and prioritise the most vulnerable population groups for vaccination campaigns, when a vaccine is available.
