Translational research in tumor microenvironment Alexandre Calon

The Translational Research in Tumor Microenvironment laboratory (TReTMe lab) led by Dr. Alexandre Calon and integrated in the Molecular Cancer Therapeutics group directed by Dr. Joan Albanell at Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) is investigating interactions between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment, studying resistance mechanisms to treatment and designing new therapeutic strategies based on original compounds.

Main lines of research

  • Actionable biomarkers predicting therapeutic outcome
  • Clinical impact of the stromal response to systemic chemotherapy
  • Contribution of the hypoxic environment to metastases formation and response to treatment
  • Interaction between immunomodulators-based therapy and the tumor microenvironment

Increased immune cell infiltration in patient-derived explants treated with Traniplatin: an original Pt (IV) pro-drug based on Cisplatin and Tranilast.

Showcasing research from Design, Synthesis and Structure of Peptides and Proteins (E. Giralt, IRB Barcelona), Translational Research in Tumor Microenvironment (A. Calon, Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute) and Bioinorganic Chemistry teams (D. Montagner, Maynooth University).

Development of prognostic biomarkers of stromal origin in colorectal cancer based on immunohisto-chemical analysis.

Doctoral thesis of Mar Iglesias (UAB, 2019).

Despite recent advances, there is still a need to find simple, accurate and reproducible methods, which are easy to apply in the clinical practice for predicting outcome and help the selection of appropriate treatment strategies. In particular, the present work relates to new biomarkers identifying cancer patients with pro-metastatic tumor microenvironment.
