A study using mice shows that animals fed a diet rich in beneficial live microorganisms suffer less from the addictive effects of alcohol consumption. The work has been published in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition. It is the first to analyse the possible relationship between intestinal bacteria and the possibility of altering addictive behaviours related to alcohol use. In the study, animals that maintain a healthy microbiota also avoid addiction relapse and have lesser effects from associated disorders such as depression and anxiety.

The board of the Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery has decided that the Hospital del Mar pneumologist and researcher at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute will head up the committee responsible for managing and organising the society's policy documents. The Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR), has appointed Dr. Esther Barreiro, a consultant in the Pneumology Department at Hospital del Mar and coordinator of the Muscle Wasting and Cachexia in Chronic Respiratory Diseases and Lung Cancer Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), as coordinator of the SEPAR committee responsible for managing the regulations and recommendations that will be issued by the society. The appointment was made at the first meeting of the new SEPAR governing board.

The Emeritus Head of the Surgery Department at Hospital del Mar and researcher at the Hospital del Mar Institute of Medical Research became a full member of the RAMC, in a ceremony held on 29 November at the institution's headquarters. Dr. Lluís Grande is now a full member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia. The appointment was made on 29 November, in a ceremony held at the institution's headquarters, in which the Emeritus Head of the Surgery Department at Hospital del Mar and researcher at the Hospital del Mar Institute of Medical Research (IMIM), delivered the speech, "Showing the data: a recipe for improving quality in an academic surgery department." The response was given by Dr. Laureà Fernández-Cruz, also a full member of the RAMC.
23/11/2021 - Covid-19
The data comes from more than 90,000 people diagnosed with COVID-19 in Catalonia up to July last year. More than 6% had suffered a stroke at some point before infection. People under the age of 60 who have suffered a stroke prior to contracting COVID-19 are three times more likely to die than those who have never suffered a stroke. This risk drops to 1.3 times in people aged between 60 and 80 and is not significant in those over 80 The researchers point out that this needs to be taken into account when determining COVID-19 vaccination priorities. The study is published in the journal Stroke. It is the first study of its kind in Spain and one of the first in the world.

The emeritus head of both the Pneumology Service at Hospital del Mar and the Myogenesis, Inflammation and Muscle Function research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute is one of the fourteen experts invited to participate. Dr. Joaquim Gea, emeritus head of both the Pneumology service at Hospital del Mar and the Myogenesis, Inflammation and Muscle Function research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMM), was one of the two international experts, and the only European, invited to participate in the drafting of the consensus document for the Colombian Association of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery, on the follow-up and treatment of patients who have overcome COVID-19.

Hospital del Mar, in collaboration with Roche, is working on a pioneering artificial intelligence tool to improve the diagnosis and prognosis of patients with small cell lung cancer, one of the cancers with the worst outlook. Based on digitised images from patient biopsies and survival data, the aim is to test whether the tool can reliably predict the benefit of the various treatments. This would allow more effective selection of the most appropriate type of treatment. At a later stage, the aim is to evaluate the specific mutations present in each tumour and to analyse whether digital imaging is capable of predicting these. Hospital del Mar, in collaboration with Roche, has initiated the development of a pioneering artificial intelligence device to improve the diagnosis and prognosis of patients suffering small cell lung cancer. This is one of the lung cancers with the worst prognosis and having such a reliable tool will allow medical teams to determine the best treatment for each type of patient.

Stanford University has recently published an update of the list of the top 2% most widely cited scientists in different disciplines, the World's Top 2% Scientists. This ranking, considered the most prestigious worldwide, is based on the bibliometric information contained in the Scopus database and includes more than 180,000 researchers from the more than 8 million scientists considered to be active worldwide, with 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields taken into account. Of the dozen researchers from the IMIM and Hospital del Mar who appear on the list, special mention should be made of Dr. Jordi Mestres, coordinator of the GRIB (IMIM/UPF) systems pharmacology research group, who is ranked number 1 in Catalonia, number 5 in Spain and 263rd in the world in the Medicinal and Biomolecular Chemistry subfield out of the 88,725 researchers in this area. The research carried out by Dr. Mestres is at the interface between chemistry and biology, where the current focus is on the development of biocheminformatics tools and databases, the topographic analysis of molecular surfaces and the design of protocols for virtual screening.

A study by researchers from Hospital del Mar, the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute and Hospital Son Espases, shows that the combination of a new antibiotic, ceftazidime/avibactam, with other antibiotics, can treat infections caused by variants of Pseudonomas aeruginosa that are resistant to all existing treatments. The study, published in Microbiology Spectrum, involved an in vitro analysis of the efficacy of the different treatments and their combinations to determine their effectiveness against variants of this bacterium, which is resistant to all existing drugs. Resistance to antibiotics has been identified by the World Health Organisation as one of the main threats to global health. Infection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause pneumonia, heart problems and sepsis, especially in immunocompromised people

Researchers from the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute and CIBERES detect an increase in oxidative stress in these patients that may favour tumour development. Reduced levels of the potent antioxidant glutathione may be used as a new early biomarker of cancer in people with chronic respiratory disease. The risk of developing lung cancer increases in patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), so understanding the cellular mechanism involved in tumour progression is key. Indeed, researchers from the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM-Hospital del Mar) and the CIBER on Respiratory Diseases (CIBERES) have just published a study in the journal Biomedicines that identifies the role of systemic oxidative and antioxidant markers, which are differentially expressed in these patients with chronic respiratory diseases, and are therefore involved in the development of lung cancer.
