Stanford University publishes the World’s Top 2% Scientists ranking and Clarivate Analytics publishes the Highly Cited Researchers list

Staff from the Hospital del Mar Research Institute (IMIM) and Hospital del Mar appear on these prestigious lists

Stanford University has recently published an update of the list of the top 2% most widely cited scientists in different disciplines, the World's Top 2% Scientists. This ranking, considered the most prestigious worldwide, is based on the bibliometric information contained in the Scopus database and includes more than 180,000 researchers from the more than 8 million scientists considered to be active worldwide, with 22 scientific fields and 176 subfields taken into account.

Of the dozen researchers from the IMIM and Hospital del Mar who appear on the list, special mention should be made of Dr. Jordi Mestres, coordinator of the GRIB (IMIM/UPF) systems pharmacology research group, who is ranked number 1 in Catalonia, number 5 in Spain and 263rd in the world in the Medicinal and Biomolecular Chemistry subfield out of the 88,725 researchers in this area. The research carried out by Dr. Mestres is at the interface between chemistry and biology, where the current focus is on the development of biocheminformatics tools and databases, the topographic analysis of molecular surfaces and the design of protocols for virtual screening.

In addition, Dr. Jordi Alonso, director of the Epidemiology and Public Health Programme at the IMIM, a lecturer in Preventive Medicine and Public Health at CEXS-UPF and associate researcher in the CIBER on Epidemiology and Public Health, is ranked number 2 in Catalonia, number 2 in Spain and 224th in the world in the Psychiatry subfield out of the 68,582 scientists in this area. His research focuses on the perception of health and the frequency and burden of mental illnesses, as well as their determinants at the populational scale.

At the same time, Clarivate Analytics, a company that provides services related to research, patents and other areas of innovation, has this week released their list of Highly Cited Researchers 2021. This annual list identifies 6,602 researchers from over 70 countries and regions who have demonstrated significant influence in their chosen field or fields through the publication of multiple highly cited articles over the last decade. Their names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1% of the most widely cited by field and year of publication in the Web of Science citation index, and the list pinpoints the research institutes and countries where they are located. These are, therefore, the researchers who have had the greatest impact in their respective areas.

As in previous years, the list of the most cited scientists in the world in their respective categories includes: Dr. Jordi Alonso, who also appears on this prestigious list in the categories of Psychiatry and Psychology and Social Sciences; Dr. Montse Fitó, coordinator of the cardiovascular risk and nutrition research group at the IMIM and researcher in the CIBER on Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition, is this year assigned to the Cross Field category, and her research is linked to studies on nutritional intervention with the aim of determining the effect diet has on cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular diseases, as well as establishing the cellular and molecular mechanisms that promote these benefits; Dr. Joaquim Bellmunt, a researcher in the IMIM's cancer molecular therapy research group, is in the Clinical Medicine category and his research is linked to clinical genitourinary oncology, pharmaceuticals aimed at new therapeutic targets and translational research in the field of immunotherapy and growth factor receptors and angiogenesis, among others, as targets in cancer therapy, and Dr. Margarita Triguero-Mas, a member of the research group on healthy cities and environmental justice (UAB-IMIM), also appears in the Cross Field category for her studies into the social determinants that make healthier and fairer cities possible, and for her studies on the social and health impacts resulting from the planning and creation of greener, more sustainable and resilient cities.
