Abstract

Cardiovascular risk factors have been shown to be related with an increased risk of other conditions such as fertility problems. However, it is unclear whether these factors actually cause infertility or if this relationship is explained by other related conditions (low socioeconomic status, unhealthy lifestyle, etc.). Combining classic epidemiological approaches with novel methodologies on genetic epidemiology such as Mendelian randomization, we are capable of understanding the causal nature of cardiovascular disease with fertility problems and other perinatal outcomes.

Biosketch

Alvaro Hernaez (BSc Pharmacy, PhD in Nutrition and Food Science, University of Barcelona) is a postdoctoral researcher of the Norwegian Institute of Public Health in the Centre for Fertility and Health (Oslo, Norway). He has 10+ years of experience in research in lifestyle epidemiology, mainly focused on the study of healthy dietary modifications and physical activity on novel and classic cardiovascular risk factors, as reflected in 50+ high-impact publications (Circulation, Metabolism, Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol, Am J Clin Nutr, Mol Nutr Food Res, Eur J Prev Cardiol). He has had several competitive PhD and post-doctoral positions in top Spanish research centers (Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, August Pi I Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute) and he is associate lecturer of the University Ramon Llull in Barcelona. He is currently studying the complex relationship between cardiovascular risk and fertility problems using data from large Scandinavian and UK cohorts, combining multivariable regression and genetic epidemiology approaches.
