Visits by Catalan Sports Authorities to the Anti-Doping Laboratory of Catalonia

On Monday, October 30th, the Anti-Doping Laboratory of Catalonia received a visit from Catalan sports authorities: Mrs. Anna Caula Paretas, Secretary General of Sports and Physical Activity; Mr. Aleix Villatoro Oliver, Director of the Catalan Sports Council (CCE); and Dr. Daniel Brotons Cuixart, Head of the Sports and Health Unit of the CCE.

The Laboratory is one of the 30 laboratories accredited worldwide by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to analyze samples from athletes. The visit showcased its complexity, as it has to meet stringent technical and quality requirements imposed by WADA to maintain accreditation.

As former elite athletes, they were familiar with the sample collection part of anti-doping controls. The visit to the Laboratory allowed the visitors to experience firsthand how the Laboratory operates and the various analytical techniques used. They also learned about the latest advancements in detecting prohibited substances in sports, some pioneered by the Catalonia Laboratory, such as detecting erythropoiesis-stimulating agents from a single drop of dried blood.

The visit concluded with a meeting with Dr. Joaquín Arribas, Director of the Hospital del Mar Research Institute, during which the Secretary and the Director of the CCE reiterated the support of the Sports Secretary to the Anti-Doping Laboratory. Various aspects were discussed to enhance collaboration and ensure that the Anti-Doping Laboratory of Catalonia continues to be one of the most advanced in the fight against doping and favors clean sports worldwide.
