Institutional statement

In 2016, the Hospital de Mar Research joined Spain's Transparency Agreement on using animals in scientific experimentation. The Transparency Agreement is an initiative of the COSCE (Confederation of Scientific Societies of Spain) that seeks to promote and coordinate transparency and responsibility actions by scientific and business entities related to animal experimentation. In 2022, more than 150 Spanish entities were participating in this initiative. Within the framework of the Transparency Agreement, the Hospital de Mar Research assumes the following commitments:

• Speak clearly about when, how, and why animals are used in research.
• Provide adequate information to the media and society about the conditions under which animal research is carried out and the results obtained.
• Promote initiatives that generate more excellent knowledge and understanding in society about the use of animals in scientific research.
• Report annually on progress and share experiences.

The Transparency Agreement has been developed in parallel to similar initiatives in other European countries, among which the British initiative was the pioneer in 2014. Under the EARA (European Animal Research Association), the various Transparency Agreements coordinate efforts and actions by the entities that are included in annual reports.
