Dr. Juan Pablo Horcajada appointed member of the Scientific Advisory Group on Infectious Diseases of the European Medicines Agency.

The head of the Infectious Diseases Department at Hospital del Mar and coordinator of the Infectious Pathology and Antimicrobial Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, was appointed to this body, which is part of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), last month.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has selected Dr. Juan Pablo Horcajada, head of the Infectious Diseases Department at Hospital del Mar and coordinator of the Infectious Pathology and Antimicrobial Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) as a member of its Scientific Advisory Group on Infectious Diseases. This is a body comprising experts in this field from several European countries, chosen by the agency after a selection process, following a proposal from the national medicines agencies. The role of this committee is to advise the EMA on new medicines for treating these pathologies. The committee provides independent advice on scientific and technical issues related to the medicines being evaluated by the agency.

The aspects they assess include the risk-benefit of medicinal products, their clinical significance, the clinical impact of the risks, the biological and clinical justification for supporting the molecules assessed, the dosing guidelines and the need for further studies. Members of the EMA's Scientific Advisory Groups are chosen from among the leading experts in their field who work in academic research or as healthcare providers.
