IntOgen, an interface designed as an essential tool for cancer research

IntOgen, an interface designed as an essential tool for cancer research The Biomedical Genomics laboratory of the IMIM and UPF’s Biomedical Informatics Research Group (GRIB in Spanish), led by Núria Lopez-Bigas, has developed an innovative system for analysing and integrating large amounts of cancer genomic data.

The results produced by this multidimensional resource, known as IntOGen, can be viewed on the web interface www.intogen.org. The February print issue of Nature Methods has published an article that describes this new resource, bringing it to the attention of the scientific community: "IntOGen: Integration and data-mining of multidimensional oncogenomic data".

A platform for managing cancer information in a more effective way.

IntOGen incorporates an intuitive and effective web interface which is designed to be an essential tool for cancer research. Cancer study has changed significantly in recent years with the incorporation of high performance technologies that make it possible to identify a large number of genomic changes in samples of cancerous cells and tumours.

The build-up of a large amount of oncogenomic data, along with the data produced by international projects like "The Cancer Genome Atlas" and the "International Cancer Genome Consortium", have given rise to the need to develop new strategies for exploring, visualising and managing all this information in a biologically significant way.

IntOGen is a new system that makes it possible to compile, analyse and integrate data from genomic experiments studying different types of changes that occur in various types of human tumours. The current version of the system contains almost 800 independent experiments.

In short, IntOGen is a unique and valuable resource for the community researching the causes of cancer, given that it facilitates the integration of a large amount of oncogenomic data in a simple and concise way.
