Hospital del Mar and GRIB take part in the EHDEN Pilot and EHDEN COVID-19 Rapid Collaboration projects

The main goal of the European project EHDEN: European Health Data & Evidence Network, is to carry out large-scale analysis of European clinical data (Real-World Clinical Data), using bioinformatics tools and standards based on the international OHDSI initiative and the OMOP common date model (CDM).

EHDEN will speed up studies and research related to characterising patients with COVID-19 and other diseases, and evaluate the best treatments and clinical management for these patients, using millions of clinical records from all over Europe.

The two projects in which Hospital del Mar and the GRIB are participating are led by Dr. Robert Güerri, coordinator of the COVID-19 Unit in the Infectious Diseases Service at Hospital del Mar and a researcher in the Infectious Pathology and Antimicrobial Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), and by Dr. Miguel-Angel Mayer, a researcher in the Integrated Biomedical Informatics Group in the Biomedical Informatics Research Programme (GRIB) at the IMIM and Pompeu Fabra University (UPF).

"EHDEN offers us the possibility of working collaboratively, with very powerful bioinformatic tools for analysing and massively integrating data from very diverse sources. This is essential and can help combat this pandemic and save lives", explains Mayer.

The EHDEN project has three fundamental elements:

  • Infrastructure, by creating a network of partners across Europe where data is integrated in a coordinated way using standards and advanced bioinformatics tools based on Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) and the OMOP common data model.
  • Research and results, by evaluating specific case studies together with the network of collaborators, based on the use of consistent methods and the incorporation of standards such as ICHOM health outcome standards.
  • Training and collaboration activities established between all the members of the global OHDSI network in the European and international sphere.

The EHDEN project: European Health Data & Evidence Network is funded by the European IMI2 initiative, contract no. 806968, which is, in turn, funded by the European Union Horizon 2020 Programme and EFPIA.
