Work carried out at Hospital del Mar receives award for best Master's Thesis Final Project from the Spanish Society of Epidemiology

A study on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the breast cancer screening programme at Hospital del Mar has been recognised as the best Master's thesis project by the Spanish Society of Epidemiology. The project was undertaken by Dr. Guillem Bosch, a resident in the PSMAR-UPF-ASPB Teaching Unit and a member of the Health Services Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute. The work was carried out during his rotation in the Epidemiology and Evaluation Unit at Hospital del Mar and was supervised by Dr. Margarita Posso and Dr. Francesc Macià, from that unit.

The study shows that participation in the screening programme decreased in the call phase following the outbreak of the pandemic, especially among regular participants. At the same time, other indicators, including recalls and false positives, also fell. In contrast, the rate of breast cancer detection in the programme remained unchanged.

The study will be presented at the SEE congress and published in the journal e-Life.
