It will analyse the role the circadian rhythm alteration of intestinal microbiota plays in the development of Alzheimer's disease. The project is one of the sixty selected in the ninth call for applications for these grants, which reward highly innovative projects in nine areas of scientific knowledge and culture. The project by IMIM-Hospital del Mar researcher Patrick-Simon Welz, 'Losing the rhythm: host-microbiota circadian communication in Alzheimer's disease', is one of the 60 projects selected in the ninth edition of the Leonardo grants, awarded by the BBVA Foundation. These grants support highly innovative proposals in various scientific and cultural fields. This year, 884 applications were submitted and evaluated by 85 independent experts divided into nine panels.

The Section Chief of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Department at Hospital del Mar and researcher at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute became a corresponding member of the RAMC, in a ceremony held on 4 October at the institution's headquarters. Dr. Manuel Pera has been a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia since 4 October. The appointment was made in a ceremony held at the institution's headquarters, in which the Section Chief of the Surgery Department at Hospital del Mar and coordinator of the Gastroesophageal Carcinogenesis research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), gave the speech, 'Improving the quality of care in digestive cancer surgery: the experience of the Spanish EURECCA Oesophagogastric Cancer Registry'. The presentation of the new member was led by Dr. Lluís Grande i Posa, full member of the RAMC and Emeritus Chief of Surgery at Hospital del Mar.

The Friends of the Hospital del Mar Foundation and APRO, the Association for Oncological Research, have awarded Dr. Edurne Arriola more than 8,000 euros to boost immunotherapy and lung cancer research being carried out at Hospital del Mar and the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute. Lung cancer research at Hospital del Mar and the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute has received a new boost thanks to the Friends of the Hospital del Mar Foundation and APRO, the Association for Oncological Research. The two organisations have managed to raise 8,000 euros, which will be used to support the work of researchers in this field.

This morning, Minister Diana Morant visited the facilities of the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, accompanied by the manager of the Parc de Salut Mar, Dr. Olga Pané, the director of the IMIM, Dr. Joaquín Arribas, and the director of the IMIM's Cancer Research Programme, Dr. Juan Albanell. During the event, she visited the laboratory of the New Molecular Targets in Cancer Research Group and met with the heads of the IMIM's cancer research groups.

The head of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Section of the Surgery Service of the Hospital del Mar and coordinator of the Gastroesophageal Carcinogenesis Research Group of the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM-Hospital del Mar), thus becomes the only surgeon in the State to be an honorary member of this institution, in recognition of his career. Dr. Manuel Pera has become an honorary member of the European Board of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, within the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) at the proposal of the institution's examining committee. So far, among the more than forty professionals who have obtained the Board, only three other surgeons from the State have managed to become fellows of the entity. Dr. Pera is the first to do so as an honorary member.

Dr. Pedro Rocha is one of the nine people to receive an award from the European Society of Medical Oncology. In his case, this means joining the lung cancer team at Hospital del Mar led by Dr. Edurne Arriola. He will also take part in the research being carried out by this team at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute in the field of small cell lung cancer. These ESMO Research Fellowship grants allow young doctors and researchers the opportunity to develop a research project in a European reference centre. As explained by Dr. Arriola, "The awarding of this grant establishes Hospital del Mar as a world-class centre of interest in the field of oncology." Dr. Rocha is currently working at the MD Anderson Cancer Centre at the University of Texas, in the United States.

The Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) and the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC) have signed a collaboration agreement with the aim of jointly promoting scientific research, teaching and training personnel in the healthcare field, as well as pooling their efforts to efficiently manage public and/or private resources available for biomedical research activities in the field of haematology-oncology.

The global organisation Worldwide Cancer Research, based in Scotland, will fund a three-year breast cancer metastasis study by Toni Celià-Terrassa, from the IMIM's Molecular Cancer Therapy Research Group. The project aims to explore the dynamics and behaviour of tumour populations that undergo epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) during breast cancer metastasis. For this purpose, advanced 3D microscopy and single-cell transcriptomic techniques will be used in conjunction with computational biology analysis.

The two IMIM researchers, Lluís Espinosa and Anna Vert, have been chosen to edit a special edition of the journal Biomedicines, from the MDPI publishing house. Under the title Stem Cells and Cancer Therapeutics, it will focus, in the words of the publishers, "on understanding the molecular mechanisms controlling normal cells and stem cells related to cancer, as well as the tools available for studying them in vitro and in vivo." This issue will focus on how new technologies can be used in cancer therapies. The special edition will include around twelve articles by particularly renowned authors. Five of these articles can already be consulted in open format, including the paper "Mammary Stem Cells and Breast Cancer Stem Cells: Molecular Connections and Clinical Implications", authored by Dr. Toni Celià-Terrassa, a researcher from the IMIM's Cancer Research Programme.

On February 4, to coincide with World Cancer Day, the AECC-Catalunya contra el Càncer, presented their Cancer Research Grants 2015 at the Drassanes Reials in Barcelona, in a ceremony attended by more than 400 people from the worlds of politics and business, as well as the general public. In this edition the AECC presented a total of €120,000 to six projects by emerging Catalan teams looking at colon cancer, leukaemia, brain tumours, gastrointestinal stromal tumours and prostate and bladder cancer. The winners include a project entitled: “Clinical implications of galectin-1 expression in genitourinary cancer: its role in diagnosis, prognosis and response prediction with immune check point inhibitors”, led by Pilar Navarro, coordinator of the Molecular Mechanisms of Tumorigenesis research group at the IMIM and Alejo Rodríguez-Vida, an oncologist at the Hospital del Mar
