The European Board of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery appoints Dr. Manuel Pera as honorary member

The head of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Section of the Surgery Service of the Hospital del Mar and coordinator of the Gastroesophageal Carcinogenesis Research Group of the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM-Hospital del Mar), thus becomes the only surgeon in the State to be an honorary member of this institution, in recognition of his career.

Dr. Manuel Pera has become an honorary member of the European Board of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, within the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) at the proposal of the institution's examining committee. So far, among the more than forty professionals who have obtained the Board, only three other surgeons from the State have managed to become fellows of the entity. Dr. Pera is the first to do so as an honorary member.

His work as Coordinator of the Spanish EURECCA Esophagogastric Cancer Registry for the last 8 years, his special interest in the evaluation and improvement of the quality of esophagogastric surgery and his academic trajectory have been highly valued by the examining committee when making the decision.

The fellowship program in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery was established in Europe in 2015 as a joint initiative of the UEMS Surgery and Thoracic Surgery Sections. Its objective is to establish a common European training program in esophagogastric surgery that allows standardization, harmonization and quality assurance in the performance of this specialty.

Dr. Manuel Pera trained as a general and digestive surgeon at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona, completing his specialization in esophagogastric surgery at the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minnesota) in the United States and at the Hôtel de Dieu hospital in Montreal, Canada.

In addition to his activity as a surgeon and researcher at the Hospital del Mar and IMIM-Hospital del Mar, he is a professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He specializes in benign and malignant pathologies of the esophagus and stomach and has been the coordinator of the Spanish Esophagogastric Cancer Registry (EURECCA), which aims to evaluate and improve the results of surgery for this pathology.

He has also founded the Gimbernat Surgical Association, an entity that brings together medical students with the aim of promoting interest in surgery. He has been president of the European Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ESDE), as well as executive director of the International Society for Diseases of the Esophagus (ISDE). He is currently an associate editor of the journal Diseases of the Esophagus, a member of the editorial boards of the European Surgical Association and the British Journal of Surgery. He is also a member of the international steering committee of The Doctor as a Humanist (DASH).

He is the author of nearly 180 articles and 30 book chapters and has been awarded the Ad. Hominem Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland.
