Surgical endocrinology Antoni Sitges
Our research lines are:
- Asymmetrical goiter. Ongoing clinical randomized study on the best surgical strategy to manage the single thyroid nodule associated with subclinical contralateral disease.
- Parathyroid splinting. Planned multicentre clinical randomized study (submitted to the Spanish Ministry of Health) on the best medical management strategy for patients developing hypocalcemia after total thyroidectomy. A new hypothesis has been advanced suggesting that low-normal s.Ca is detrimental for the ischemic parathyroid gland and that medical treatment should aim at putting at rest the ischemic parathyroid’s with more aggressive treatment with calcium and calcitriol.
- Loss of signal during recurrent nerve neuromonitoring. Ongoing clinical research study to investigate the causes and the possibility of immediate recovery of a lost signal during recurrent nerve dissection. For the first time we have shown that a loss of signal can revert during the surgical procedure and it must not lead to avoid contralateral surgery (staged thyroidectomy) as suggested by some authors.
- Bone mass recovery after parathyroidectomy for primary hyperparathyroidism. Ongoing clinical cohort study (2004-) on the changes in bone densitometry after successful parathyroidectomy and on the clinical, genetic and metabolic factors involved in bone mass recovery.
