International Day of Women and Girls in Science- February 11

#SheInspiredMe, the role of women in driving science

Only 30% of researchers in the world are women and about 30% of all students choose higher education in the field of science. In the case of the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute, 51% of researchers are women, but there is still a long way to go.

Historically, the role of women in the field of science has been left in the background. With exceptions, the work of female scientists has been overlooked, ignored, or attributed to their male peers. This was reported by Matilda Joslyn Gage, the inspirer of the #NoMoreMatildas.campaign. But even today, the role of women in research still needs to be vindicated.

IMIM and Hospital del Mar are once again promoting this 2021, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the #SheInspiredMe campaign, in which researchers, doctors and nurses explain which women have been their source. of inspiration to engage in research and to move forward. A vindication of female talent that we want to extend to everyone, encouraging you to record your own videos and post your photos using the hashtag #SheInspiredMe.

Guadalupe Gómez Melis

Mathematician and professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya and researcher in the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Research Group at the UPC, she is the person chosen by Gemma Vilagut, postdoctoral researcher in the Health Services Research Group at IMIM-Hospital del Mar and CIBERESP. "One of the first women I know who has held positions of great responsibility and who has fought for gender equality in Statistics."

Käthe Paulus

The life of this aerial acrobat and inventor of the folding parachute is one of the inspirations of Jana Selent, group leader of the GPCR drug discovery research group at IMIM-Hospital del Mar, who works to identify antiviral drugs that interfere with the SARS-CoV2 infection cycle. "There are many women in history who have inspired me in particular through courage and persistence in overcoming barriers due to just being a woman."

Miriam Merad

Professor of Cancer Immunology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York and director of the Precision Immunology Institute at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Miriam Merad, is the person who the researcher in the Biology Research Group of the B Cells of the IMIM-Hospital del Mar, Giuliana Magri, has cited as a source of inspiration for her career, which now focuses on studying the antibodies generated in response to SARS infection- CoV-2. "Apart from being an excellent and successful scientist, she is also very committed to improving the conditions of women in science and facilitating the development of their research careers."

Other activities, organized by the PRBB, to commemorate International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Virtual round table at 12 pm "I am a woman and I am a scientist" (in Spanish) organized by the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the PRBB with female researchers from PRBB centres, who will discuss topics, such as the impostor syndrome, job difficulties associated with gender or feminism in the scientific field, among others.  http://bit.ly/11Fmesaredonda

Wikimarathon from 5pm to 7pm. Also virtually, you will be able to participate in our traditional Wikimarathon, where we will aim to increase the visibility of female scientists through the creation, edition or translation of Wikipedia. ? http://bit.ly/viquidonesPRBB2021

Finally, do not miss the series of videos "Soy mujer y científica" that we have been uploading daily until 11F, where young scientists from all PRBB centers present themselves and talk about their research and their experience as scientists from a gender perspective.
