This will be the 10th time that staff from the IMIM laboratory takes part in the Olympics
From the 27th of July until the 12th of August the London 2012 Olympics will be taking place. Once again, and thanks to an agreement between King’s College in London and the IMIM Foundation, as of the 23rd of July a group of technicians from the IMIM Bioanalysis and Analysis Services research group (Rosa Ventura, the sub-director of the Barcelona laboratory; Oscar Pozo; Raúl Perez Ortuño; Lorena Garrostas; Cristina Gómez; Andreu Fabregat and Núria Renau) will join the Official Antidoping Laboratory of the London 2012 Olympics.
Staff from Barcelona will perform tasks in four different areas: quality guarantee, analysis through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, analysis through liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, and analysis of Erythropoietin (EPO) and related substances. It is important to mention that this is one of the laboratories contributing more staff and that, thanks to the high quality services and reliability it offers and its international prestige, this will be the 10th time, since the 1988 Seoul Olympics (Korea), that staff from the IMIM laboratory takes part in the Olympics.
Jordi Segura, the director of the Antidoping Control Laboratory, will participate at the Olympics as the coordinator of the group of Experts from the International Olympic Committee Laboratory, together with Doctor Christianne Ayotte from Canada and Doctor Grigory Rodchenkov from Russia. Their role will be to supervise that developments at the laboratory meet international regulations, reviewing any adverse result technically before starting any procedures, supervising possible counter-analyses and acting as experts in situations that require this.
Also, Toni Pascual, who is also a sub-director of the Barcelona Laboratory, as the chief of the International Paralympics Committee’s Antidoping Committee, will supervise that everything develops adequately at the controls done during the London 2012 Paralympics, from the 29th of August until the 9th of September, and shall preside over the hearings when there are adverse results
