Jordi Segura, Director of the Laboratory for Anti-Doping Control of the Hospital del Mar Research Institute (IMIM), was recently appointed President of the World Association of Anti-Doping Scientists (WAADS) for a two-year period.
WAADS is an association that brings together high-level managers and scientific staff from all the anti-doping laboratories accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regarding the scientific and research activities conducted at these centres. WAADS’ objectives are to maintain levels of excellence in science and the practice of anti-doping programmes to benefit all athletes. Its main activities focus on participating in scientific meetings, developing quality-assurance programmes, harmonising and updating emerging methodologies and collaborating scientifically with the World Anti-Doping Agency, national anti-doping agencies and sports federations. This is all done while stimulating the exchange of information and collaboration among its members.
Dr Segura has also been appointed member of the Scientific Committee of the Catalan Ministry of Sport. In a gesture of recognition, the current Secretary-General for Sport, Ivan Tibau Ragolta, called for Jordi Segura to participate in this committee, valuing his contribution to the future of science and sports-related projects that the Catalan Ministry of Sport can develop.
The Laboratory for Anti-Doping Control in Barcelona is one of 33 laboratories around the world accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Since 1985, when it was accredited by the International Olympic Committee, it has conducted anti-doping control for national and international sports competitions. Its main objective has always been to provide high-quality and reliable services and to assist in improving the capacity of anti-doping laboratories through research excellence. In this respect, it has received national and international recognition on various occasions, and laboratory staff holds key positions in international organisations related with the fight against doping.
