The Anti-Doping Laboratory of Catalonia collaborates with the Paris Olympic Laboratory

Tres profesionales del Laboratorio viajarán a la capital francesa para apoyar la labor de lucha contra el dopaje que se realizará durante los Juegos Olímpicos y Paralímpicos de París.

The Hospital del Mar Research Institute will be Olympic again. Three of the professionals of the Institute's Anti-Doping Laboratory of Catalonia will work in the Olympic Laboratory during the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. They are Sergi Coll and Lídia Requena, who will travel to Paris to work at the Laboratory from July 26 to August 11 during the Olympic Games, and Indira Anselmo, who will work from August 28 to September 8, during the Paralympic Games. Sergi Coll is a specialist in the detection of anabolic steroids, and Lídia Requena and Indira Anselmo are specialists in the detection of hormones (erythropoietin, growth hormone...) and blood transfusions.

In addition to being the laboratory for the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games, personnel from the Anti-Doping Laboratory of Catalonia have collaborated in all the Olympic Games since it obtained its accreditation as an anti-doping laboratory in 1985. "Participating in the doping controls of an Olympic Games has a very special interest for the professionals who are dedicated to doping control," says Rosa Ventura, director of the Anti-Doping Laboratory of Catalonia. "The Olympic Laboratory brings together many of the best professionals in the world and, in addition to helping friends and colleagues from the Paris Laboratory who need the support of specialists from other laboratories to ensure the analytical quality required with such a large volume of samples, it is a unique opportunity to catch up and learn about the latest anti-doping methodologies," she adds.

The Paris Laboratory will analyze 6,000 samples during the Olympic Games and another 2,000 during the Paralympic Games. This high volume of samples requires a lot of analytical equipment and a large number of specialized professionals, organized in shifts to cover 24 hours a day. In addition, the Olympic laboratory will have state-of-the-art anti-doping methodologies implemented, including the detection of doping substances in dried blood samples or genetic doping.
