The IMIM is once again organising the series "Visions of Science. Our brain, that great unknown."

In collaboration with the Barcelona library network

From 25 April to 20 June, 2022, the series "Our brain, that great unknown" will be held in various libraries across Barcelona, supported by the Barcelona library network. This series is part of the "Visions of Science" project organised by the Barcelona Library network, and for the third year it has been entrusted to the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM) thanks to the success of previous editions.

The series will run for 8 weeks. Every Monday at 6:30 pm there will be free talks, open to everyone, on topics related to the brain, a complex and fascinating organ about which we still have a great deal to discover.

In this series we will learn about the latest data provided by new scientific advances in this field thanks to the participation of leading experts from Hospital del Mar and the IMIM. We will find out everything from how the brain works and how it behaves in the face of illness to how emotions are seen in the brain and the latest brain surgery techniques.

These talks will be held alternatively in 4 of Barcelona's libraries: Camp de l'Arpa - Caterina Albert Library, El Clot Library, Xavier Benguerel Library, and Francesca Bonnemaison Library.

Through this initiative the IMIM-Hospital del Mar wishes to show its commitment to promoting scientific culture by facilitating public access to knowledge.

Below is the schedule and more information on the 8 talks included in the series. Click here if you would like to download the whole programme.

We are waiting for you!

Getting to know our brain

25/04/2022 at 6:30 pm - Camp de l'Arpa - Caterina Albert Library

What is our brain like? Do you know how it works when it comes to processing information, reasoning, remembering, and making decisions? Do you know what cognition is? Thanks to research in the field of neuroscience we are increasingly able to understand the human mind.

  • Aida Fernández-Lebrero. Neurologist at the Cognitive Impairment Unit at Hospital del Mar and researcher in the neurofunctionality and language research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).
  • Greta García. Neuropsychologist. Researcher in the Neurovascular research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).

Headaches, everything we should know about them

02/05/2022-at 6:30 pm - El Clot-Josep Benet Library

Half of the world's population suffers from headaches. What are the most frequent causes? Can they be prevented? Can they be treated? And what happens when pharmacological treatment is not enough? Can surgery help headaches?

  • Daniel Guisado Alonso. Attending neurologist in the Headache Unit at Hospital del Mar and researcher in the Neurovascular research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).
  • Gloria Villalba. Coordinator of the Neurosurgery Unit at Hospital del Mar, consultant neurosurgeon in craniofacial pain for the Craniomandibular Institute and the Clavel Institute, and researcher in the Neurofunctionality and Language research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).

Stroke: before, during and after

09/05/2022- 6:30 pm - Xavier Benguerel Library

In Spain, stroke is the leading cause of death in women and the third ranked in men, and is estimated to affect 1 in 6 people at some point in their lives. How can we prevent it? What treatments are available? What is the recovery process?

  • Jaume Roquer. Head of the Neurology Service at Hospital del Mar and coordinator of the Neurovascular research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).
  • Esther Duarte. Head of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Unit at Hospital del Mar and coordinator of the Rehabilitation research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).

Emotions and cognition in the brain

16/05/2022- at 6:30 pm El Clot-Josep Benet Library

Are emotions in the brain? Can we see them? Emotions and cognition depend on the proper functioning and coordination between various brain structures. Today we can visualise and study these in patients and animal models using neuroimaging and neurophysiology. This allows us to better understand the neural networks involved in emotions, learning and memory and the disorders related to these.

  • Joan Deus. Researcher at the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Research Unit at Hospital del Mar.
  • Arnau Busquets.  Researcher in the Cellular Mechanisms in Physiological and Pathological Behaviour research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).

Why does the brain sleep?

23/05/2022- 6:30 pm - Francesca Bonnemaison Library

Sleep is important for resting and maintaining day-to-day activity, but also for attention, memory and physical and mental well-being. In fact, we spend a third of our lives sleeping. But why do we sleep? What happens in the brain when we alternate sleep and wakefulness?

  • Ainara Barguilla. Attending physician in the Epilepsy Unit at Hospital del Mar.
  • Ion Álvarez. Ion Álvarez, clinical neurophysiologist and expert in sleep medicine at Hospital del Mar.

The addicted brain

30/05/2022- 6:30 pm - Camp de l'Arpa - Caterina Albert Library

Addiction is a complex disease of the central nervous system, in which the person, the environment and the substance or behaviour interact. How can it be avoided? What do we know about the addict's brain?

  • Rafael Maldonado. Coordinator of the Neuropharmacology research group at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF) and a researcher at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).
  • Marta Torrens. Head of Addictions at the Institute of Neuropsychiatry and Addictions at Hospital del Mar and coordinator of the Addictions research group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).

Eating and living with the brain in mind

13/06/2022- 6:30 pm - El Clot Library

As we age, our brain undergoes changes that can lead to different pathologies, including the loss of our memory and other abilities. Can we do anything to prevent this? What role does our diet play? And what about our day-to-day activities?

  • Anna Boronat. Nutritionist and researcher in the Integrated Pharmacology and Systems Neuroscience Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).
  • Aida Cuenca. Neuropsychologist and researcher in the Integrated Pharmacology and Systems Neuroscience Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).
  • Laura Forcano. Psychologist and researcher in the Integrated Pharmacology and Systems Neuroscience Research Group at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).

Mental health and COVID

20/06/2022- 6:30 pm - Xavier Benguerel Library

How has the pandemic affected our mental health? Older people, young people, people who have suffered from the disease? What should we do if we want to have good mental health? Protective risk factors and approaches for dealing with mental health problems.

  • Jordi Alonso. Director of the Epidemiology and Public Health Programme at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health at the CEXS-UPF, and Deputy Scientific Director of the CIBER in Epidemiology and Public Health.
